It seems like you can never get enough wood for crafting in Minecraft. That’s because wood is such an important crafting material in the game.
The good news is that unless you’re in the desert, you can get all the wood that you want from trees. And best of all, you can make it even more convenient by starting your own little tree farm so that you can harvest all the wood that you want.
Sounds pretty good eh? So, let’s dig in and learn more about Minecraft tree farms.
Benefits Of Tree Farms in Minecraft
The primary benefit of planting your own tree farm in the game is so that you can cut down the trees for wood. If you’ve got your own tree farm, then you don’t have to worry about finding enough trees for wood.
And when you have access to a lot of wood in the game, then you can do a lot more building and crafting. Just think of the possibilities.
Another benefit of tree farms is that some of the trees drop items that are useful to you, such as apples. Sure, apples aren’t as effective as cooked food, but they’re free and useful so it’s a win-win situation for you.
Having your own tree farm is also time-saving because you won’t have to run all over the place to find what you’re looking for. Instead, you can plant a variety of trees, just like you would do for a regular crop farm.
Minecraft Tree Growing Basics (How To Grow Minecraft Trees)
The good thing about growing trees in Minecraft is that it’s actually really easy to do. This means that even novice players can easily get a tree farm planted.
To start a tree farm, you just need to plant tree saplings. Don’t have any tree saplings? Here’s how to get them:
- Chop down a tree.
- Collect saplings from the leaves that remain.
Yes, it really is that simple when it comes to getting those saplings to plant for your tree farm in Minecraft.
Here’s what you should know about planting tree saplings in Minecraft:
- You don’t have to plant them near or by water.
- It usually only takes one Minecraft day for the growing to start.
- Plant the sapling just by placing it on the ground.
- You need to make sure there are no blocks on any of the four sides (diagonal is okay).
How To Organize A Minecraft Tree Farm
You can plant those saplings for your tree farm in pretty much any manner or design that you want. There’s zero rules when it comes to starting a tree farm in the game.
Since you need to have at least one block of empty space on the four sides of the trees, you cannot plant the trees side by side — unless you leave that space. To keep the tree farm compact, many players choose to plant their trees in a diagonal grid pattern.
This way you keep proper spacing while keeping the tree farm as small as possible, while maximizing the number of trees in the space.
Tools Needed To Work A Minecraft Tree Farm
With a tree farm, you’ll be doing a lot of wood chopping, which means that you need some good axes. Stone and iron axes are going to be the best axes for speed.
But you can also use the wood from the trees to craft some wooden axes – just know that the chopping will be slower with one of these.
A composter is something that you’ll eventually need to build and keep near the tree farm. The reason that you’ll need this is because of all the saplings you’ll end up getting that you won’t actually need.
Then, you can take those excess saplings and put them in the composter. When you do this, the saplings are turned into bone meal.
And, of course, you can use the bone meal to make your trees grow faster.
Do you want to keep those trees growing through the night? If so, they will need a light source, which means that you should put torches along the perimeter of your tree farm.
The torches offer enough light to keep the trees growing through the dark night.
Types Of Minecraft Trees You Can Grow
As you might expect, you can grow any of the trees in Minecraft as long as you get a sapling for it. This means that you can have a good variety of trees in your tree farm, or you can stick to one or two varieties of tree.
If space is of concern to you, then keep in mind that some of the larger trees actually require more space to grow.
Some of the types of trees can you can grow on your farm in the game include:
- birch
- oak
- pine
- acacia
- spruce
The best trees you can plant and grow for harvesting wood in Minecraft are birch and oak. This is because they are the easiest to farm and grow.
You can get a lot of wood from Dark Oak trees, but they are a bit of a pain to grow. That because they require four saplings instead of one to plant for growth, and when you cut down a dark oak tree in the game they don’t always drop saplings for you.
So, it can take a while to actually get the four required saplings to even plant your first dark oak tree in the game.
If you’re tempted to plant some spruce trees, then you should know that they grow to be very tall. And this can be problematic because their height makes them difficult to harvest.
And though it’s not every efficient, you can even plant your tree farm underground (like in the image above). Pretty cool, eh?
